Business Model:

Commonwealth Financial Systems, Inc., was founded in 2001 by current CEO John Kotula. It identifies itself as northeast Pennsylvania’s “premier collection agency.”

In the same year that Commonwealth was formed, it quickly merged with Northeast Credit and Collections (NCC). NCC had a twenty-five year history of debt collecting in Pennsylvania. Commonwealth handles check collections, debt purchasing, and credit bureau reporting for financial, retail, government and medical clients locally and nationwide.

Pennsylvania says Commonwealth Financial Systems owes $1.5 million in unpaid taxes.

* Ranking determined by the overall number of debt collection complaints to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) as of year-end 2015 and should be considered in context of company size and/or market share. See the CFPB debt collection complaint database in real-time here
