Business Model:

Nationstar Mortgage is the second-biggest non-bank mortgage servicer in the United States, licensed in 49 states and the District of Columbia. It has over 2 million customers and a servicing portfolio in excess of $402 billion in unpaid principal balance.

Nationstar buys mortgage notes and collects on them and they combine mortgage servicing with loan originations.

Founded in 1994, Nationstar was privately held until 2012 when it made its first public offering of stock.

Nationstar formerly operated as Centex Home Equity Company, LLC.

Nationstar also does business as Champion Mortgage and is a subsidiary of Nationstar Mortgage Holdings, Inc., as is sister company Nationstar Capital Corporation.

In 2013 Nationstar purchased California-based loan originator Greenlight Financial for $75 million in cash.

In 2014 Nationstar purchased Real Estate Digital (RED) for $18 million in cash.

Nationstar failed to fund 141 home loans in the state of New York where the Department of Finance has “significant concerns” about Nationstar’s mortgage practices.
