Identity theft does not always mean somebody opened an entirely new account in your name. Somebody may instead obtain access to a credit card account that genuinely belongs to you and use it to make unauthorized purchases.
The account is yours.
The fraudulent charges are not.
That distinction is important because people sometimes think, “It can't be identity theft because I really did open this credit card.”
It can still involve misuse of your identity or account information.
